                                                CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

It’s big stuff every year and 2011’s events are no exception.  Annual Catholic Schools Week here, Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, is for the entire parish and rightly so. We celebrate not only Catholic education in general but our own parish school in particular.

Right now we stand at 78 students, K-5.  This special upcoming week supports them and their families with a packed agenda and a little something for everybody. Even parishioners with no children in school should try to show up for something.  If you are a church member, then this is your sFr Weary.gifchool.

We begin with the 11 a.m. Mass, Sunday, Jan. 30, emphasizing a Catholic school theme, and our own school children taking lead roles in the liturgy. A pancake breakfast and basket raffle is for everyone that day in the school cafeteria, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which tours of the school will be available to prospective students and their families.

An ice cream social for students and parents, 1:15-2:15 p.m., is featured Monday, Jan.31, while Tuesday, Feb. 1, becomes Crazy Hat Day, with students allowed to wear their craziest head gear.  They also make Valentine’s Day cards for local senior citizens.

An open house for the public is slated for 6:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, p.m., with the faculty available then to answer questions. The weekly 9 a.m. school Mass, Thursday, Feb. 3, coincides with St. Blasé Day, so we will have the customary blessing of throats at the liturgy.  Lunch that day is the famous annual spaghetti dinner for children and staff, cooked every Catholic Schools Week by Mr. Tom Storm, our janitor, followed by a 4th and 5th grade spelling bee, both events in the cafeteria.

A faculty and staff appreciation lunch is for Friday, Feb. 4th.  That evening will see a Skating Party for students and their families at the Carousel Skating Rink.

The 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland GALA dinner dance caps off the week, 5-11 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Rec Park Community Center.  There will be wine tasting, a variety of foods provided by many local restaurants, live music, dancing, gift grab bags, fun and fellowship. Tickets are $50 per person, now available at the parish office and after Mass, with proceeds going to our school..

Though not a Catholic Schools Week event, honorable mention goes to an information night about the new Boalsburg Catholic high school, St. Joseph Academy, starting up this fall.  At our school cafeteria, two academy board members will give a talk and field questions 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10. A registration day will then be held, again in our school cafeteria, 3:30-7:30 p.m., followed by another information talk, given by the principal, Douglas Pleggi.

It seems Catholic schooling is on a roll here. Be part of the action during our big week.  See you in school!
